St.Cyrill church was built in the middle of XII century in distant suburbs of ancient Kiev called Dorogozshychy. From here, a founder of the church Vsevolod Olgovich, Prince of Chernigov, attacked and invaded Kiev in 1139 in time of the internal war in struggle for prince's throne.
The temple served as prince's residence and dynasty burial-vault. In 1194. prince of Kiev Svyatoslav was buried here - a hero of an ancient Russian poem "The Tale of Igor's Regiments". St.Cyrill church has survived desolation and reconstructions. In 1748-1760, the stone monastery buildings were built under guidence of a famous Ukrainian architect I.Grygorovich-Barskyi, but only part of fence with a small tower has remained. After reconstruction works of XVII-XVIII, the ancient St.Cyrill church got its modern look made in Ukrainian baroque style. In 60s of XIX century, St.Cyrill church was paid much attention to by public: the fresco of XII century was discovered under plaster made in XVIII. In 1881-1884, very hard works were made under guidence of a professor A.Prahov - the fresco were renewed and cleared up. The teachers and students of Kiev School of Painting took part as well: N.Murashko, I.Seleznev, N.Pymonenko, H.Platonov, I.Izshakevich, S.Gaiduk,F.Zozulin and others.
In 1884, Russian artist M.Vrubel worked there. The ancient fresco were painted with oil paint, by request of the church confessors. The new marble parapet and altar were installed as well that time. In may, 1929, St.Cyrill church was declared to be the State Historical-Cultural Museum-Reserve. The research works were started again after the Great Patriotic War. In post-war times, hard anti-wreck work was done in order to maintain the damaged walls and foundation of the church caused by the ancient undeground passages destruction. The architecture of St.Cyrill church has remained well since XII century. While the church was reconstructed in XIX century, the special painting was made by a famous Russian artist M.Vrubel - his painting represents all his talant and innovations. One of the most wonderful masterpieces is his painting " Coming down of the Holy Spirit". The artist represented the images of apostles which have all the complicity of human feelings. Vrubel managed to create a gallery of portarits having very deep ppsychologic features. Here, there are his "Angels", half-image of Jesus Christ, heads of prophets Moses and Solomon. In bay narthex, the painter presented his "Cry Over Grave". The picture presents three angels in sorrow, bending over Jesus body and there is a subtle contrast between smooth movements of angels and unmoving state of Jesus made on the combination of grey and green and purple of the background. This picture amasingly produses an impression of deep sorrow.
Vrubel painted the icons "Athanasius", "God's Mother", "Christ", and "Cyrill" in Venice which were specially made by him for marble altar, by project of A.Prahov. The best one is, of course, "God's Mother" which presents an image of a little young woman, having suffering in her big eyes and pictured in rich clothes. The ancient architecture of the church and its wonderfull wall painting make the monument be one of the most valuable and interesting museums of the country.
