Across the batlle fame І

November 7 is the day of the Great October Revolution. Once it was one of the most important and ceremonial holidays, celebrated with parades, salutes and concerts all across the Soviet Union. Today, 90 years later, it is an obsolete, half-forgotten date, remembered only by few.

Nevertheless, the past importance of this holiday, its great significance for each Soviet citizen and its role in the history of our former state do not permit us to ignore it.

Thus, we dedicate the tour named «ACROSS THE FAMOUS BATTLE PLACES» to the developments of the Great October Revolution.

Before starting your journey through time and space, drop into the Ukrainian National History Museum and visit the halls dedicated to this topic, after which the routes presented will serve as an excellent illustration of the famous events.

We would like to bring to your attention two possible routes:

«Peace to huts, war to palaces: revolutionary underground». The key places of this route illustrate working conditions, in which underground revolutionary organizations had to take their actions. They also demonstrate views and ideas of “revolutionaries” and “counter-revolutionaries” throughout the narrow streets, lanes and back streets of the city center.

Duration of walk: 1,5-2 hours.

It is recommended to take with you: comfortable shoes, sunglasses or an umbrella (subject to weather), camera, amount of money – 10$ minimum (plus a sandwich and a bottle of water or a thermos with tea).

«The splendor and misery of the proletariat: revolutionary esthetics».

This route includes the most beautiful places connected with the events of October Revolution: park paths and alleys, palaces and monuments. A walk along the autumn City will, on the one hand, narrates about severity and misery of revolutionaries' life, and, on the other hand, discloses the beauty of Kiev as it was in the revolutionary autumn 90 years ago.

Duration of walk: about 1,5 hours.

It is recommended to take with you: comfortable shoes, sunglasses or an umbrella (subject to weather), camera, amount of money – 10$ minimum.

«The splendor and misery of the proletariat: revolutionary esthetics».

Volodymyrskaya str., 2

Ukrainian National History Museum. Before starting off to the offered routes, visit the exposition, dedicated to the revolutionary events of the beginning of the twentieth century and listen to the narration of the guide. It will make the orientation in the events of this complex period much easier for you.

1.Hrushevsky str. (near Europeyska Square). Petrovsky Statue. (START)

The statue to G.I. Petrovsky, famous party and public figure of the first half of the twentieth century.

This statue is notable for the fact, that, along with the statue of Lenin, it has been preserved until today as an example of Soviet epoch sculpture.

This statue is an illustration of “monumental propaganda“of the middle of the previous century, that embodies an image the ideal party figure and communist.

In addition, this place was the beginning of the Proletarian park, created by the young Soviet authority at the place of the farther corner of Tsarsky garden. You will be able to walk its paths, if you round the monument to Petrovsky on the left and go up the road.

2. Hrushevsky str, house No 8-а

A little upper Hrushevsky street, on the right side you will see a corner house, former mansion, which once belonged to one of the most famous Kiev families, the Brodskies. This house was situated in the centre of the end of the nineteenth century city. In 1917 on the second floor of this house the “brains” of October revolt in Kiev, Bolshevik party Kiev Committee, was located. Right from here an order to begin a revolt was given. From this house instructions for further actions came and the detachments of workers and soldiers were directed.

3. Institutska str, 13/4

At the crossroads between the Institutska and Sadova streets there stands one of the most beautiful buildings of the art nouveau epoch city built by famous Kiev architect and millionaire baron Schleifer for his private use. What kind of connection is there between this house and Soviet civilization? The thing is that on the second floor of the house a secret address of the underground organization “Arsenalets” was located. This organization became a kind of successor of the ideas of struggle against anti-Soviet forces.

4. Hrushevsky str, 5а. Mariyinskiy Palace.

One of the most luxurious buildings in Kiev, Mariyinskiy Palace, is in front of you. Built for private use of the royal family, it received guests only several times. But it became a revolutionary forces' residence for a long time.

In the revolutionary consciousness this building was naturally a stronghold of imperialism, therefore, communists' attitude to it is difficult to define as careful. Famous episodes from the Eisenstein's film about the occupation of Winter palace in Petrograd are world-known, while the siege of Mariyinskiy Palace in Kiev is known little about.

In 1917-1918 three important revolutionary organizations including revolutionary committee, preparing the October revolt of 1917, were located here. As these organizations had to be protected well from the counter-revolutionary forces, different types of weapon were settled around the palace and even inside of it, in the halls.

90 years later, the palace is barricaded again – it is being restored. That is why the most convenient point for seeing is back façade.

5. October Revolution memorial

Right in front of Mariyinskiy Palace you will see a small memorial looking like a funerary monument. This is, in fact, the memorial to October revolution and all those who fell victims to those events. The odd thing about this memorial is placing it in front of Mariyinskiy Park, disregarding the fact that not only communists, as well as hated by them representatives of bourgeoisie, intellectuals and imperial élite became victims of the revolution. Nevertheless, this memorial remains harmonious and preserves its calm esthetics.

6. Mariyinskiy Park (Monument to Participants of the January revolt)

Walking down the paths of autumn Mariyinskiy Park you will notice the next point of our tour, Monument to Participants of the January revolt. The huge workman with a flag in his hand looks furiously and gloomily at the spectators, standing with his legs apart and his head jerked up. This monument was erected in 1967, much later than the January events took place. This image of the proletarian hero seems to have come down from the posters of the revolutionary times.

7. Hrushevsky str, 30/1. Military school.

Walking up Hrushevsky str., pay attention to the green-blue building, protruded to the street like a large semicircle. This is the Military School.  The building was raised exactly in the years of the revolution as a place for military men's entertainment.

From the architectural point of view, this house embodies experimental search for a new style in the architecture of the young Soviet state. The heads of cavalrymen in Budenny's army above the first floor windows reflect the spirit of the epoch.

The building seems to be small and compact, but at the same time it contains 150 offices, two halls, a library and the Kiev Command History museum.

8. Mazepa str.,1. Arsenal workshops.

One of the most secret buildings of our route is hidden behind the grey fence. It was not even mentioned in the Soviet encyclopedias of Kiev.

Today Kiev commandant's office is located there, but once it was the nest of the revolutionary cadre, the third pontoon battalion, soldiers of which took active part in the struggle for the soviet authority establishment in Kiev.

Earlier it was the part of huge and severe Kiev fortress. Nowadays it resembles a part of some kind of romantic castle with towers and massive redbrick walls.

9. Moskovska, 2-10. Plant «Arsenal»,

Grey and severe building on the other side of the street, with the walls depressed by bullets and shells, is the former plant “Arsenal”, the main territorial center of the events of 1917-1918. The revolt of the workers of this plant against Ukrainian government became the crucial moment of the revolutionary period.

In honour of that revolt, a commemorative sign was set on the wall of one of the plant's oldest buildings.

The small museum of the plant “Arsenal” will help you to plunge into the atmosphere of the revolutionary period.

10. Near the exit from the «Arsenalna» metro station.

The gun facing the plant reminds us of how the bullet depressions appeared on the plant's walls. Somehow, exactly this piece of ordnance was chosen as a monument to the heroes – workers of the plant, who, under the guidance of Bolsheviks, were battling for the Soviet authority establishment in October 1917 and January 1918. The authors of the monument obviously intended to depict the essence of the events, which took place here and were fresh in people's memory to the time of the monument erecting, 1923.

11. Park road (Askoldova Mohila)

(FINAL)

Far from the city bustle, on one of Kiev park roads the legendary place, Askoldova Mohila, is found. According to the legend, remains of the first Kiev prince Ascold lay here.

The remains of other heroes, those who battled for Ukrainian state and died under Kruta station in the battle against Read Army in 1918, were brought here too.

In silence and light calmness, in a bit melancholic mood, autumn paths will lead you there and give you an opportunity to enjoy peacefulness and beauty of nature.
