The memorial complex "The National Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945."

In June 1943, during the battle and ruthless fights for liberation of the Ukraine, the government of the Soviet Union took decision to establish a republican museum of the Great Patriotic War.

But only in 1981, on the 9th of May the memorial complex"The National Museum of History of The Great Patriotic War 1941-1954" was opened in the Dnipro's shore. It was designed according to the project of a famous sculptor E.Vuchechich and an architector E.Stamo. All the works were done by the sculptores and architects from Kiev and Moscow: V.Borodai, V.Elizarov, I.Ivanov, G.Kyslyi, I.Mezentsev, F.Sagoyan, N.Feschenko, V.Shvetsov and others.

All the huge country was involved in the project. It took almost five years to make a detailed plan of it and prepare the territory in order to install the museum there. The hundreds of the well-known enterprises, scientific institutes and authorities, such as Kiev Pariszhs'ka Kommuna factory, the union "Artist", the E.O.Paton Electic Welding Institue and many others were in work. The military subdivisions were involved together with the youth. The whole enterprise was under absolute control of the government of Kiev. Much effort, creative inspiration and energy was put in the creation of the memorial by a director of the museum Vasylyi Andreevich Kozlov.

Working Hours:

Museum is opened from 10a.m.-5p.m., closed on Mondays. Relic exhibits ("The Tragedy and Glory of Afgan","The Other's War") opened from 10a.m. to 5p.m. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The exhibition of the war technics and arms:opened from 9a.m.-7p.m. every day.

Exposition

The whole memorial complex takes the square of more than 10 hectares. It includes: the museum and the monument "Motherland", the main square with the Alley of City-Heroes and sculpture-exhibits "Forced Crossing of Dniper" and "Passing the arms", the gallery of the war heroes including bronze compositions, the cup "Fire of Glory", the exhibition of the military technics and weapon of that time, the seperate building where you can have a look at the sacred exhibits: "The Tragedy and Glory of Afgan", "The Other's War", the planes LE-2 and helycopter MI-24B are opened for visiting.

You will get to know about our Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, the heroical defense of Kiev in July - September 1941, courage and braveness of the Red Army, tragical days of our history when Kiev was occupied by Hitler solgiers, battle near Dniper, and liberation of the city in October - November 1943. The museum is quite interesting and it is really worth visiting it - no matter what you personal view of the Second World War is - you will have an idea of what has actually going o no this territory in 1941 -1945..... Remember, Kiev was absolutely flattened!
