Podol Holy Places

Podol was inhabited at the beginning of the common era. Later it became the place of craftsmen. Here before baptizing of the Rus first orthodox temple was build on its place

Ilyinska Church stands. The center of the Podol was Kontractova square or as it was called those days Torzhysche. Right here all contracts and trade operations were carried out between craftsmen and merchants.

The oldest Educational Institute of Kiev – Kiev Mohila Academy was founded in 1632 as a union of Bratskaya and Lavra schools. It was the first higher school not only in Ukraine but in all Eastern Europe.

There is active Female Frolov Monastery on the Podol territory. It is well known since XV century, monastery complex includes Voznesenska Church 1722-1732, two-store refectory, bell tower and father superior houses.

Church of Mother of God of Pirogoschi was build by the son of Vladimir Monomah – Mstislav in 1132-1136 this building was a social and religious center for Kiev citizens. There was a school, city shelter, city archive and hospital.

Also first post office in Ukraine was founded in the Podol in 1775.

At the moment on the Post square stands The Church of Christ’s Birth. Architect Andrew Milensky build it in Empire style in 1809-1814. Here requiem service for Taras Shevchenko was carried out.

Important monument for Kiev history is the Magdeburg Right stele given to the city by the Alexander the I.
