Founded in 1972, in International Year of Book established by UNESCO. The museum is situated in the territory of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, in the building of former Printing House founded by archimandrite Elysey Pletenetskyi and it has been working non stop for about 300 years (beginning XVII century-20th of XX). The total exposition square is almost 930km2 (three exposition halls and two exhibition halls, total area of 300 m2.

The museum possesses an invaluable treasure of Ukrainian book culture (almost 56,000 units).The exposition reflects a history of domestic publications and printing business beginning from the times if Kyevan Rus and to the present; it also represents the history of Cyrillic alphabet (written language of the Slavs), story of a scribal book of X-XVI century, printing business of Europe, beginning and development of Cyrillic bookprinting, publishing activities of Ivan Fedorov and other outstanding creators of Ukrainian book in XVI-XVIII century. The old editions are introduced in the museum whose authors are the famous Ukrainian figures of XVII-XIX century: Petro Mohyla, Innokentyi Gyzel, Ioanykyi Galyatovskyi, Iosyp Tryzna, Lazar Baranovich, Tuptalo (Dmytro Rostovskyi), Eugenyi Bolhovytynov. The bookprinting houses of Lavra, Chernygyv, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Lvyv made a big contribution as into the history of printing of Ukraine as cultural, spiritual and educational life. The early editions of XIX-XX centuries are presented in the museum:books on science, technics, education, art, different documents, examples of printing industry and boocs with autographs of the popular writers, scientists, editors, politicians and culture figures. You can see here the books illustrated by the talanted and famous of the past and present, the books decorated with gold, silver or pearls. The editions who has been awarded are exhibited in the museum, bibelots, postage-stamps, private docs and materials, publications of Ukrainian diaspora abroad (Australia, Argentina, Canada, USA etc). The museum introduces occasional exhibitions and it welcomes to invite you for its creative meetings, to visit lections and exhibitions. The life and activity of the museum is reflected by mass media (newspapers, magazines, periodic editions, radio and TV). The museum also gives its legal and private service. Open every day from 10a.m. to 6p.m. Closed on Tuesdays.
